The Real Freaky Friday Foto

Guess who turns 6 tomorrow and got a gift from their Aunt Lyn today???

Not So Freaky – Friday Foto

Usually on Fridays I post some strange and crazy photo I’ve come across on the web.  But today I didn’t have it in me after taking this sweet picture of my daughter at the park yesterday.

The story behind the photo is this:
We were playing with friends at the park when this sweet little boy about 2 or 3 walked up to my daughter with his granddad.  One hand was wrapped securely around a petunia and the other tucked safely in his granddad’s hand.  His granddad explained that he had picked the flower for my daughter.  She was so excited.  It was the cutest moment.  And I’m sure it was a picture of things to come.  I hope my daughter remembers and will always require that little boys (or big ones) treat her with honor, respect and admiration.
I love you baby girl…

Our first Playoff Game

I wanted to post a few photos from our first play off game.  It ended up being an easy game to win.  Our next game (next week) is against another undefeated team so it is sure to be a barn burner.  Yikes!!!  Alyssa has been helping me with some photography settings.  She’s got great help over at her blog.

Here’s one of our boys.  He earned his nickname this year playing defense.  My hubbie got their nicknames put on their jerseys as a surprise the day before our first playoff game.

This handsome fellow is the running back in the family.  Therefore, with Thunder must come Lightning.

Here "Lightning" is running for a touchdown and the ref looks like he’s getting ready to throw a flag!  See his hand on the right part of the screen?

Have a great day!

Off we go!

This Saturday my youngest son turns six.  It’s so hard to believe.  When we moved here I didn’t even know I was pregnant.  It was shortly after we moved to South Carolina that I found out I was pregnant.
I wanted to do something special and memorable for his birthday (plus I’m one of those nightmare moms who hates throwing birthday parties) so my husband and I came up with the idea of going to Stone Mountain GA for the day Saturday, watching the laser show that night, and sleeping in a HOTEL.  I really think that is going to be the part he enjoys most.  My husband had reward points so we don’t even have to pay for the hotel.  We’re staying in the Evergreen Marriot right at Stone Mountain.  Yippee!!!!
We’re all really excited.
Now, what to do for #2 son’s birthday.  It’s in February…..

Something they don't tell you!

Here’s something I bet most of you don’t know.  I just learned it yesterday.
Braces can cause the roots of your teeth to shorten.

Maybe not a big deal at first but definitely can be a big deal later if you are ever dealing with root canals and the likes.  I have a tooth that had a root canal many years ago and then I ended up having surgery on the tooth (really the gum) because of some infection.  I’ve been trying to get the metal eliminated from my mouth and so my dentist and I have been exploring our options again.  The endodontist recommended a dental implant.  A TITANIUM POST SCREWED INTO MY HEAD….okay, thanks but NO THANKS.

I just don’t remember the orthodontist ever telling that orthodontics could shorten the roots of my teeth.  I may (or my mom) may have still chosen to have them but it would be nice to know that as a possible side effect.  After talking with my dentist this morning it seems that the longer you wait to put braces on your child the better.  That way the teeth have time to fully develop before you begin messing with them.

On another note, a much brighter one, I’ve been searching for my original bible for 2 weeks now and finally found it this morning.  YIPPEE.  I’ve bought a new one and use it but my old one has 12 years of growth etched in the margins.  I took my bible on a trip 2 weekends ago and haven’t been able to find it since we returned.  Let me tell ya, I’ve torn this house apart!  God certainly used it to get a few junky closets and drawers cleaned out!!!

(Big Sigh!) I love my bible

More White Balance Practice

Alyssa over at Live and Learn has been kind enough to teach those of us further behind her in the quest for awesome photography a thing or two about White Balance. (click here for her tutorial)
Here are some more shots I took on Tuesday while waiting the the never-ending car line to pick up two of my boys that do attend school outside of our home.

THE SHOE
Custom WB

Cloudy Setting

Shade setting

Sun setting

Full Auto Setting

I had this tennis shoe of my daughter’s in the car so it was perfect to work with seeing that it was white.  Which one do you think is the closest to true color?
Alyssa, what do you think???

Wordless Wednesday – An Undefeated Football Season

From last night’s game:
My husband coaches and two of my sons play.

Photo Challenge : White Balance

Here’s today’s efforts at playing with White Balance:
I was taking photos in the Shade outside.

Shade Setting/ ISO 200/ Fstop 11 ( I think I have that last one right)

Cloudy Setting/ISO 200/Fstop11

Auto Setting/ISO 400/9.0 Fstop

I didn’t have a grey card to do an custom white balance but I may try with a white piece of paper.  I’m trying to understand all of this but with my camera I also have to pick all the other settings on my camera when I pick the White Balance.   I don’t know if I tried the other settings differently if I’d gotten much different pictures.  But here’s what I got today.

After some feedback here are a few more shots:
Inside the house by a light with the overhead light on too….

My subject was "on the move" so the photos leave a lot to be desired in the content catagory but here it is…

YIKES….my first attempt with the camera set on tungsten

Attempt #2  Tungsten setting and Camera on TV mode (not AV)

My model with my self-made 18% grey card…

MY home made grey card shot…

And my shot with custom WB
ISO at 400; Shutter at 1/8 and Aperture at 6.3
(and I’m still really learning how the shutter and aperture work)
But I can see in this one that the white looks much whiter.  Thanks Alyssa.  Can’t wait to see what you think.

Here they are as close as I could get them.  I can’t figure out the side by side arrangement.

I didn’t correct these with my Photoshop program.  I just left them as is.

Are you to busy to think?

Sometimes I feel so caught up in my life I forget how to think, how to be quiet, how to ponder.

Last night my daughter woke up around 5am.  She came to get in the bed with us and my husband got up to put her back in the bed.  She wasn’t happy and I could hear her crying from her bedroom.  The crying got louder and when I got up to check on her my youngest son was in her room trying to comfort her. (Awww…)

I shuffled him back to bed and went in to try quieting her.  I curled up beside her and soon she was quiet and still.  So, here’s my few minutes of quiet, time to think and ponder when the house is dark and still and the only sound in the suckling of my daughter enjoying her thumb.

I thought of how much like God I was to my daughter.  Not in a sick and twisted sense but in the way He enters my room (heart, life) and I am quiet.  My heart stills.  I feel safe and all is well.  He is my comfort.  He calms my fears. AND He’s the only One who can give the comfort I seek.

What a glorious picture of Himself God gave me very early this morning as I snuggled next to my 3 year old.  My soul longed for Him again in the still of the night.   During my busy day I often forget to just stop, close my eyes, and invite Him into my room to curl up beside me and hold me tight.

I like being held tight by Him….
Longingly,
julie

Field Trips! Field Trips

I’m excited because I’ve been planning field trips for the last two days.  Congaree National Swamp near Columbia SC has an OWL Walk on Friday nights from 7:30-9:30pm.  Does that sound cool or what???  That’s scheduled for sometime in October.
I think we may visit Stone Mountain, Georgia for my youngest son’s birthday and check out the lazer show they have after dark.  It sounds like a fun trip and we may even be able to swing a night in a hotel room too.  My kids love that!!!
Then, we have the Apple Orchard trip planned for the end of October and a Wolf Howl (in the NC mountains) for the first of November!
Hey, you guys want to come too???
We’re going to have fun!!
