Heads or Tails?
I think tails!

Just when you think you are making progress

There have been many beautiful blogs that I have read recently who’s owners are such great photographers and Photoshop enthusiasts.  I’ve been impressed and have been motivated to try my hand at learning more about Photoshop and how to use it and have fun with it.
Then I came across this photo blog today (actually a flickr account) and I was floored.  This person is a marvel.  If you have time to browse her photos and her artwork she is amazing!!
I humbly succumb…I’ll never be that good!

New Camera Goodies

February is usually a good month for us financially.  Taxes and bonuses roll in about this time of year.  So while we are still on the Dave Ramsey get out of debt plan we usually splurge and spend money on something both me and my hubbie have wanted.

This year he wanted some new exercise equipment and I was contemplating a few things for my camera.  I use a Canon XTi but have two others that I use occasionally too.  My first digital camera was a Kodak Easyshare DX6490.  I still love that camera when all I want to do is capture something on film and I’m not busy trying to learn (which is where I am with the Canon).  And for Mother’s Day last year I asked for a pocket camera so that I could always have one with me to capture those moments I won’t get otherwise.  It’s a Fuji Z5.  I love that little guy too.  Having these two smaller cameras also allows my kids a chance to take pictures without me having to worry about their sweet little hands on my Canon.

All that said I’ve decided to buy a Canon 58mm f1.8 lens this year.  I’m so excited about getting it.  After spending two days reading up on the lens I’m even more excited.  I’ve learned some cool words like the term for that wonderful “out of focus blur” that is so desirable in portrait shots is BOKEH. And it has a lot to do with the lens you are using, not the camera or the photographer (yippee).  Here’s an article I enjoyed reading about the subject.  It has great examples and is easily understood.

I’ve also learned a lot about f-stop.  Why someone couldn’t come up with a few easily understood words is amazing to me. If you would like to read more about this particular lens you can find great reviews here. Alyssa at Live and Learn has helped in my decision making process.  She has some great advice on photography so check the tips on her blog if you have a chance.
Here’s a good discussion about f-stop or aperture.
And this is a good practical discussion about aperture(or f-stop) /ISO/ Shutterspeed and how they work together.

There’s a lot to learn when you dip further into the photography world.  Meshing all of it together can sometimes feel overwhelming.  So I allow myself times to learn and times just to shoot pictures in hopes that SOMETHING comes out good enough that I can fix anything that’s wrong in Photoshop.

One thing if for certain.  I love taking pictures.  It’s a gift my dad passed down to both me and my sister.

Thanks Dad!!

Last Night's Lunar Eclipse

Here is a great site where you can view the Lunar Eclipse from different places in the world.  It’s really cool.  It took a while to load since the site is busy but it’s worth the wait.
Enjoy

President’s Day

Today earned us a much needed break from school.  I still think we should work 4 days and take 3 off.  That just suits my personality so much better than work 5 take 2 off.  Who made that rule?

Anyway…since two of my kids were out of school today the one I homeschool naturally took the day off too.  We enjoyed doing nothing today because tomorrow is a “hit the ground running” kind of day.

Next year I am homeschooling all three boys.  Our two middle boys are enrolled at a local Christian school this year.  I’m looking forward to having next year with them.  I don’t like running in the car all day long.  Dropping off at school, picking up from school and the rest that goes in between ends up with us spending a lot of time in the car.

This year has been a great learning experience for me.  I’ve become a better organized mom.  I plan my days better and I actually create lesson plans. (GASP)  I’ve grown as much as a homeschool mom as my children have as students.  I think I learn as much if not more than they do each year.

I know next year will bring even more challenges while I try to keep three rambunctious boys on task.  Any suggestions????

I tell you all this to lead into these pictures I’ve been waiting to post.  This is what we do when we are not “doing” school.  I did say rambunctious didn’t I??

The Flying Boy…

and the flying girl…

Oh yea!  I’m toast!

A Kansas Kinda Sky

Ok, I’ve never really been to Kansas but I imagine today’s sky in SC really belonging in KS.  We had a lot of clouds and wind today with just a little rain.  As I was picking a couple kids up from school I got a few photos of today’s sky.  I believe ominous best describes it…

(this one is from out of the car window facing one direction)

(and this from my 3.5 year old daughter out her window)

and the other direction was this sky…..

Yep, just call me Dorothy (and that’s Toto in the side mirror in photo #1)

A beautiful sunset

Last week God gave us the most magnificent sunset.  I did not have my Canon with me but did have my pocket Fuji that never leaves my side.  I missed the best pictures because I couldn’t pull over at the time but here is just a taste of how beautiful it was.  The entire sky looked as if it was on fire.  These just don’t quite do it justice.

Freaky Friday Foto

Today’s foto took me until evening to post but here it is.
I’ve heard it said that pets look like their owners…..
or is it that owners look like their pets???
Hmmmm……either way here’s me and Sparky.

You know you live in SC (and most southern states) if…..

Things I Learned Living in South Carolina :
1. A possum is a flat animal that sleeps in the middle of the road.

2. There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 of them live in SouthCarolina.

3. There are 10,000 types of spiders.  All 10,000 of them live in South Carolina, plus a couple no one’s ever seen before!

4. If it grows, it'll stick ya.  If it crawls, it'll bite cha.

5.'Onced' and 'Twiced' are words.

6. It is not a shopping cart, it is a buggy.

7. 'Jaw-P?' means 'Did y'all go to the bathroom?'

8. People actually grow and eat okra.

9. 'Fixinto' is one word.

10. There is no such thing as 'lunch.'  There is only dinner and then there is supper.

11. Iced tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you're two, and South Carolinians do like a little tea with our sugar!

12. Backwards and forwards means 'I know everything about you.'

13. The word 'Jeet' is actually a question meaning 'Did you eat?'

14. You don't have to wear a watch because it doesn't matter what timeit is.  You work until you're done or it's too dark to see.

15. You don't PUSH buttons, you MASH them.

16. "No. Jew?'" is a common response to the question 'Did you bring any beer?'

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA IF:
1. You measure distance in minutes.

2. You've ever had to switch from heat to A/C in the same day.

3. All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, insect or animal.

4. You know what a 'DAWG' is.

5. You carry jumper cables in your car...  For your OWN car.

6. You only own five spices: salt, pepper, vinegar, ketchup, and Texas Pete.

7. The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but require 6 pages for local gossip and motor sports.

8. You think that the first day of deer season is a national holiday.

9. You find 100 degrees Fahrenheit 'a bit warm.'

10. You know all four seasons: Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer and Christmas.

11. Going to Wal-Mart is a favorite past time known as Goin' to Wally World.

12. You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good chicken stew weather.

13. Fried catfish is the other white meat.

14. We don't need no dang Driver's Ed.  If our mama says we can drive we can drive dag-nabbit.

15. You understand these jokes and forward them to your South Carolina friends (and those who just wish they lived in South Carolina).
